Emergency Response Planning Advances Nuclear Power Safety
Advanced visualization of impacts from an accidental radioactive release at nuclear power plant allows for preparation of site-specific response actions.
FACTOR integrated radiological plume model results into our custom operations support system to enhance the visualization of potentially impacted areas during nuclear facility emergencies. The system provides tools and automation functions to assist with emergency operations involving radiological plume overlay selection and orientation, emergency response planning areas, protective action recommendations, display of evacuation time estimates, map presentation of traffic management plans, and the development and display of critical radiological emergency planning data requirements to include: response resources, emergency reception centers, and siren route alerting. The system is in use in the Emergency Operations Center and by the state and county governments surrounding the facility.
FACTOR also developed an analytical framework and methodology to assess sound pressure level coverage areas and population exposure affected by emergency alert sirens. FACTOR developed solutions to address how variations in topographical features, vegetation, and building density can have significant impacts on the effectiveness of siren alerts.
